Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Tanner EAP Mission?

Tanner EAP is a west Georgia work-based resource designed to assist employees and managers in identifying and resolving issues that interfere with workplace productivity. Tanner EAP is available to all employees and dependent members of their families.

What are some of the issues addressed by EAP?

Mental health difficulties and concerns, child development and elder care concerns, emotional trauma, alcohol or other substance abuse problems, marital separation or divorce, organizational changes and productivity challenges are among the issues that may warrant a call to Tanner EAP.

Issues that may interfere with personal and workplace productivity can range from personal and family concerns to those related to job performance and stress.

What happens when I call EAP?

First you will be greeted by someone who will listen to your reason for calling. He or she will then either transfer your call to a licensed counselor who can give you immediate assistance or will schedule you a convenient appointment time to come in and speak to a counselor.

When you arrive for your appointment you will be asked to complete paperwork that will provide basic information to your counselor and that will assure you of your privacy and confidentiality. Next, you will spend time with the counselor assessing the problem, identifying strengths and resources and looking for solutions.

Sometimes, depending on the nature of the concerns, you may also be referred to other professionals such as other mental health counselors, physicians, or any variety of specialists. If necessary, return appointments may be scheduled in order to assist you in continuing to work toward an acceptable resolution.

How long do the appointments last and how many will I need?

The first appointment usually lasts about an hour and a half with subsequent appointments lasting up to an hour. We specialize in short-term counseling so the number of visits is determined by the specific problem and your company’s contract with Tanner EAP.

What is the cost and who can use EAP?

Individuals are not charged for telephone contacts or visits to Tanner EAP. The service is provided by your employer through a contract with Tanner Health System and is available to you and any of your dependent family members. If you are referred to other professionals, in most cases your health benefits will pay a portion of those costs.

What about my privacy?

Both state and federal laws as well as the professional licensing board provide for strict protection of your privacy in the matter of personal concerns. Whatever you bring to Tanner EAP will not be shared with anyone outside the EAP staff unless you give permission for your counselor to share specific information with specific individuals. The company you work for receives statistical reports periodically but those reports provide no information that identifies any individual.

Are there exceptions to the Privacy Laws?

Yes. In cases of suicidal intent, intent to harm someone else, or the suspicion of child or elderly abuse, licensed counselors are required to act in ways that will prevent harm to the client or to others. This may involve contact with the individual’s family, private physician or, in extreme circumstances, with legal authorities.

Do I need to be referred to EAP?

Most of the time, individuals are self-referred or may have been encouraged to call by a friend, family member or co-worker. In other cases, managers or supervisors may refer employees either out of concern for the individual or because the person’s job performance suggests that a personal problem may be affecting their ability to do their work effectively.

What are the office hours for Tanner EAP?

The EAP office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with additional hours available by appointment. For medical or mental health emergencies, you should contact the nearest hospital emergency department.
